Even apart from the sex-related issues themselves, there is something decidedly unseemly about two of the biggest news stories of recent weeks, those involving presidential candidate Herman Cain and Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. The problem is one of basic unfairness – and it is increasingly a blot on American culture.

It’s not the ceiling, it’s the floor.

For those wanting to understand and analyze presidential primaries – not in terms of who should or shouldn’t win, but instead in terms of trying to figure out who’s actually ahead in the “horse race” towards a party’s nomination – this focus on floor rather than ceiling is the single most important lesson to learn.

A congressional “supercommittee” right now is laboring to find $1.2 trillion in ten-year “savings” (from “projected” spending levels) in order to avoid the next budgetary meltdown, but in truth that amount is child’s play compared to what can and should be done. Actually balancing the budget would require that amount to be saved not every ten years, but every single year for perpetuity. The good news is that plenty of people have identified potential savings that would rein in excesses without causing societal hardship.
