At the risk of beating a dead horse, it remains important to continue fleshing out the meaning and dangers of the new federal requirement that health-insurance plans cover sterilization and abortion-inducing prescriptions. The current administration continues to try to make the controversy a debate about contraception, but it’s not: It’s a debate about religious freedom, and about rights of conscience endowed upon us by a loving Creator.

 The current controversy surrounding the “contraceptive mandate” from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has focused on too narrow a set of issues. The issues at hand aren’t the virtues or vices of contraception (or, worse, pills that induce abortion), and they aren’t not just about Catholic hospitals or charities, and they aren’t just about whether “preventive medicine” is cost-effective in the long run.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – One big problem with Congress is not that its members spend too much time in Washington and too much time legislating; it’s that they aren’t doing enough of their legislative duties, while trying to return too often to their home districts.

This might be counterintuitive, but it’s true.
