Against the naysayers who would push faith and its related values completely outside of the public square, two university speeches by prominent Americans in the past year provide the right corrective. In highlighting the messages of the speeches, we need not, and do not, take a stand on any particular political candidacies. Instead, the focus should be not on the speakers, but on the messages themselves, important as they are.

From both government and from gatekeepers of mass pop culture come two increasing trends, seemingly contradicting each other but both hugely detrimental to society.

On the one hand, in every realm but those related to sex, government and pop culture push an ever-lengthening infantilism, or at least an absurdly elongated adolescence, whereby law and society refuse to hold younger people (teens and young adults) to reasonable standards or to make them take full responsibility for their own behavior. On the other hand, when it comes to matters sexual, ever-younger cohorts are bombarded with information, propaganda, and even titillation to which nobody but adults should be exposed.

Despite all the well-merited attention paid two weeks ago to the Supreme Court case challenging the “individual insurance mandate” in the president’s health-insurance law, the court decision allowing the mandate to be enforced as a “tax” is far from the end of the story. Multitudinous other lawsuits against the law remain outstanding, and at least a few of them still could result in the court invalidating the entire law at a later date.
